Profit machinery upgraded while volume still arriving: realized structural margin step-up with growth flowing onto it
The model's full reasoning — Q2 2017 call → NOWe need to answer YES or NO based on the transcript. The question: Does management convey that the company has ALREADY ACHIEVED A STRUCTURAL IMPROVEMENT IN HOW MUCH IT KEEPS FROM EACH UNIT OF BUSINESS — through changes the company itself made that are now visible in the recent period's actual results — AND that business volume is SIMULTANEOUSLY GROWING onto that improved structure, so each arriving increment converts to profit at the new, better rate with most of that arriving volume still ahead of the reported results? We need to evaluate both halves. Half 1: Realized company-made step-up in per-unit economics. Management describes the business now earning meaningfully more per sale, unit, customer, or transaction than it recently did via a rebuilt cost structure, changed delivery model, richer mix actually being sold, pricing genuinely achieved and sticking, or removal of structural drag. Presented as observed fact of recent period and attributed mainly to company's own actions. From transcript: Dave says: "Our EBITDA increased by $2.4 million or by 6.3% sequentially... Our EBITDA and gross margins both increased sequentially, and on a year-over-year basis. Our EBITDA margins increased by 130 basis points sequentially to 33.5%, and by a 170 basis points from Q2 of 2016. Our GAAP gross margin improved sequentially by 50 basis points, and improved year-over-year by 200 basis points." Also: "Our gross margin excluding depreciation increased sequentially by 50-basis points year-over-year – by 50 basis points and year-over-year by 80 basis points. Our gross margin was 57.4% for the quarter..." He also mentions operational leverage, on-net revenue growth outpacing off-net, contribution margins above embedded margins. And "We will continue to get operating leverage in our business. We actually saw our on-net revenue growth outpace our off-net revenue growth, and that carries higher contribution margins. We also know that our contribution margins remain significantly above our embedded margins, and that should also allow us to continue to demonstrate operating leverage and have our margins improve." But note: The margin improvement is partly due to revenue growth, not necessarily a structural change in per-unit economics.
