Hypothesis Tested: Running the company for a size the numbers don't show yet

By Artul.ai Research Group · n = 88 earnings calls · First published 2026-08-28

Some companies talk about a scale they haven't reached yet — describing operations, capacity, or ambitions sized for a much bigger business than current numbers show. Among 497 earnings calls flagged for this pattern, 88 (17.7%) fit it. The hypothesis: does running ahead of your reported size predict anything? For anyone who listens to calls, it's a common posture worth testing against what the transcripts actually show.

The most striking signal is co-occurrence: these calls show up 2.11 times more often alongside "Volume About to Step Up" (53.4% vs 25.4% baseline). Their language profile reads confident and specific — confidence 7.7 vs 7.33, specificity 7.73 vs 7.65 — with slightly lower stress. Guidance is a touch more upbeat: 29.5% raised guidance vs 21.7% baseline. But realized outcomes lag the talk: median next-period return was −0.27 vs −0.11 baseline, and only 33.3% beat expectations vs 38.1%.

These are AI-read fields from a single pass over 22,449 transcripts, and the labels are noisy. The return comparison (27 calls) is descriptive history, not a trading signal — our own forward tests failed to confirm directional prediction. Language models also partially remember famous stocks' histories, which contaminates any backtest of language patterns like this one.
